A Florida teen who was convicted of child pornography for ’sexting’ - sending a picture of his 16-year-old girlfriend with his cell phone - now must register as a sex offender.
Phillip Alpert of Orlando was 18 when he reacted to an argument with his girlfriend by sending a nude picture that she had sent him to her friends and family.
Florida is one of many states that require individuals convicted of sex crimes to register as sex offenders regardless of the circumstances. This is just one reason why it’s critical to hire a qualified lawyer if your child is targeted in a sexting investigation.

A veteran school administrator from Virginia who was investigated by police after looking into allegations that students were ’sexting’ has finally been cleared.
The trouble started for Ting-Yi Oei, an assistant principal at Freedom High School in South Riding, Virginia, when he was asked to investigate allegations that students were ’sexting’ - sending sexually suggestive photos to each other with their cell phones.
Oei found a photo on one student’s cell phone and was told by the principal to save a copy on his office computer for the investigation. The technologically challenged Oei asked the student to forward the photo to Oei’s own cell phone.
School officials took no action against the teen, but when he got into trouble a few weeks later Oei told his mother about the photo. She was infuriated that school officials didn’t notify her about the sexting incident and contacted police. Investigators ended up charging him with child pornography in connection with the photo taken from the teen’s cell phone. It took more than a year for Oei to clear himself.
Adults aren’t the only ones who can be harmed by overzealous officials investigating sexting. Your child’s future can be irreparably damaged by a sexting investigation, so it’s critical to have a skilled lawyer on your family’s side.

Legal commentator Lisa Bloom is set to appear on Dr. Phil today to discuss ’sexting’ - the practice of sending sexually explicit or nude photographs with cell phones.
Teens who enage in ’sexting’ are increasingly being targeted by prosecutors pursuing child pornography charges. Bloom is a vocal critic of prosecutors who seek to punish teenagers for adolescent behavior using laws designed to protect minors from adult predators.
“The recession has left police without funding for rape kits and left crime labs without funding to perform DNA tests in murder cases,” Bloom wrote recently. “What a waste of resources to prosecute kids for being knuckleheaded adolescents.”
A child pornography investigation has the potential to threaten your child’s future, so if your teen has been targeted in a sexting case, it’s important to seek the help of a skilled attorney.

A federal judge has barred a Pennsylvania prosecutor from filing child pornography charges against teenage girls who sent suggestive photos of themselves with their cell phones.
The Pennsylvania case is the latest example of prosecutors pursuing criminal charges against teens for ’sexting’ - sending nude or sexually explicit photos with their cell phones or posting them on the Internet.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of the girls after Wyoming County District Attorney George Skumanick Jr. threatened to file felony charges against them unless they attended a five-week after-school education program.
U.S. District Judge James Munley issued a temporary restraining order barring Skumanick from prosecuting the teens. The judge will hear arguments from both sides in June.
A ’sexting’ investigation could harm your child’s reputation and future even if no charges are filed. If your teen is involved in a ’sexting’ investigation, a skilled defense lawyer will fight to ensure that your child’s rights are protected.
